From coffee grounds to mushrooms
Here we are mixing oyster mushroom mycelia in a substrate of spent coffee grounds and husks with boiling water added to kill unwanted fungi and add humidity. This is part of a project at Sydney University designed to offer employment and good nutrition to local indigenous people. We are being taught about using various growth media obtained from discarded organic resources by Chido who teaches orphans in her home country Tanzania to grow mushrooms for food and income. Here we are using discarded coffee waste as a growing media. The hand-mixing process feels like a delightful hand massage and is a sociable occasion.
