Street art in Portland, Oregon, USA

We humans are hard-wired through evolution to take an interest in patterns. We are a pattern-recognising species. This sunflower is one of a number of intricate natural patterns painted on road surfaces to attract the interest of drivers and slow traffic. In permaculture design our capacity to copy, imitate or reproduce patterns serves us well, provided the patterns we reproduce are appropriate. If forward-thinking permaculturists develop locally-appropriate patterns of design, these can be quite quickly copied and reproduced when more people see the sense in these patterns. - David Arnold  Photo: Richard Telford
